The industry sells these tools for $30,000 to $75,000 dollars, but this design can, and should be, provided to engineering students for less than $300, while still making a profit for your University, estimated at $20 Million annually. My goal is to see these 1 and 6 Gigahertz bandwidth DSOs (With your University's-Name on the enclosure) in the hands of the majority of engineering students world-wide, the same way that nearly all students today are using a program based on Berkeley's University SPICE. Why did a University and not the EDA industry develop SPICE? Why can this revolutionary DSO not be designed and marketed by the T&M industry? I have no explanation for the SPICE question, but the DSO question has a definite answer, which is based on the research and discoveries of Harvard Professor Clayton M. Christensen. Both had the intention to use my DSO design inside application specific Instruments selling for $10,000 to $20,000. --- I turned them down, because I want to see it used as general purpose DSO, specifically designed for University laboratories, and selling for the very low prices that all PC peripherals are marketed today, (four times component cost). If, at a later time, the DSO IP is being transferred to a T&M Company for the general market, a low cost version for students and schools should be sustained. T&M Companies are not working with a markup above cost of 30%, but have a requirement of over 300%.

Besides my naïve idea of benefiting the engineering students and our profession in general, what academic engineering concepts can be explored with these designs?

1.) Widening the concept of Software Defined Radio to a more general principle of Software Defined Mixed-signal Systems, because this is apparently the only way in which SoC for analog can become a reality. --- (See Advanced Mixed-signal, and my own papers on this subject.)
2.)
The above is a new concept of Fault Tolerant design, which now also targets the tolerances of the manufacturing stage.
3.) Pushing the bandwidth of this new DSO concept beyond present instrument limits of 50Gigahertz to 200Gigahertz or even higher. (Requires IndiumPhosphide (InP) comparator chips, which are already being sampled. See performance)
4.) Defining a new language, or modifying existing hardware description languages to optimize the design process for these new structures. (See Equivalency)
5.) Integrating the DSO software with SPICE and other EDA type programs. (See my paper "Instruments for your Work-station in 2005", 7of 9)

Of ALL DIGITAL SCOPES, only sequential equivalent-time-sampling instruments offer bandwidths as high as 50 GHz. This capability makes such scopes the instruments of choice in applications of rapidly growing importance---electro-optics, for example.

At a $30,000 starting price, the above might be the "bleeding edge" instead. But here is a PC-Card DSO, which has very similar performance and can be marketed for $400 in a 6-GHz, and for less than $800 in a 50 GHz version. And while this Card-Scope uses the same sequential-sampling concept, a new DIS method (Dual Incremental Sampling) takes many samples per repetition just as random-sampling does, but it is even faster responding. This characteristic makes this Card DSO a general-purpose scope for all frequency ranges. Another advantage of the DIS method is that a digitizing resolution of up to 12 bits is obtained directly, not by averaging many traces, as it is done with conventional scopes. (See Specification)

The present 6-GHz design uses only readily available (commodity) ICs, but with the new IndiumPhosphide (InP) chips bandwidth can go beyond 50-GHz, while the power consumption still remains within the constrains of the PCMCIA format. The cost of only one of the Tektronix TDS8000 would buy 30 of the PC-Card DSOs. But of course, there needs to be a standard PC, which will also perform the many post-acquisition task listed as features for the TDS8000. - There is only one "small" problem, no T&M company will market it!

The two alkaline batteries are only needed for applications with the new USB OTG enabled PDAs, for all other applications the 900 mW of power is provided by the USB link.

Because Universities are not likely to respond to this proposal; which would “motivate” many more of our “young” to become creative engineers, the words by Jack Gifford, CEO Maxim Inc, and Craig Barrett, CEO Intel.htm will become our reality. It was Prof. Ben G. Streetman, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and member of the National Academy of Engineering, who summed it up into just one sentence. He said: (“Every year, we’re educating about half the number of engineers that the country needs and importing the rest.)

As one famous American once said: For evil to persist [and bad times to come]: It only takes a few good men to do nothing!

At this time I have found only two other (retired) engineers to help me develop at least a 200 MHz version of this DSO concept. To make the product very affordable to students it will be based on the $79 GameBoy by Nintendo, which has a high quality color display. The objective is to keep the total cost of the complete package to less than $200 and to develop and distribute (market) this DSO to students only with a “non-Profit Organization” named EE-Logos.org.
